Meet Smartal Engineering: Advancements in robotic automation

The AMPS partner Smartal Engineering OÜ (https://smartal.ee/) is providing us updates on WP2 (Cell manufacturing) activities.

Smartal has made significant progress in automating the unloading process on the conveyor line by selecting and designing the right type of collaborative robot (cobot). The chosen cobot was selected for its speed, safety, and ability to work alongside human operators, replacing at least one line worker.

Using advanced 3D modeling and simulation tools, Smartal calculated the optimal time intervals and movements for the cobots. These robots are integrated into a system controlled by a central electrical cabinet, managing four robot stations, air pressure, and conveyor operations. The system, based on a PLC controller and HMI panel, allows operators to monitor robot status, production counters, and activate manual mode, complying with EU safety directives.

Images showcase the process of stacking and unstacking elements during sintering. In the simulation, two cobots were shown efficiently loading and unloading, demonstrating the potential for mass production and optimized workspace organization.

Smartal has also developed a specialized gripper using Bernoulli suction cups, enabling the handling of elements of different sizes with minimal contact. This gripper, produced using 3D printing, allows for precise lifting, which is crucial in prototype development. Photos  show the real-life testing of these grippers.

Additionally, Smartal created a lifting mechanism for the gripper, crucial for stacking tasks. The robot adjusts its position with each element lifted from the stack, ensuring precision through pneumatic cylinders and linear bearings.

The Bernoulli gripper provides a strong and accurate grip, ideal for handling elements after the oven, preventing contamination and damage to lightweight or irregular items. Although some silicone materials may leave marks, alternative covers can be used to avoid this issue.
